The Oak Ridge High School class of 1964 recently presented a check for $6,300 to Lisa Downard, principal of the Oak Ridge Preschool on New York Avenue, to equip and maintain the playground at the new preschool facility being constructed in the Scarboro Community.
The new preschool is expected to be ready for 200 students, ages three and four, in early 2020.
The school for at-risk students is funded by Head Start and other government sources. Parents of the students are not allowed to hold fundraisers for the school or its playground because the school is supported by Head Start, a U.S. government program started in 1965.
The class had decided at its last reunion to donate to the preschool, so it established a reunion committee to carry out the project. Committee members are Bob Cantrell, Richard Dawson, Eddie Holden, Jean Norris, Judy Russell, Downard and James Coleman, volunteer videographer. Not included from the Class of 1964 committee are Janice Moody, Glenda Langenberg, and Mike Stevens.
Seen with the committee are early Preschool teacher Mary Elizabeth Alexander, Oak Ridge Schools Director Dr. Bruce Borchers; and School Board Chair Keys Fillauer.
